Smart Meters and Laptop Computers

By Allyson Westcot

Smart metering is a system that lets your home or business electricity meter monitor your use and send that info back to the collection center each day. The meter is connected into the system, put simply. Meter readers who come to your home and test your usage are no longer obligatory. But just as importantly than that, smart meters give corporations the ability to watch use, measure it and glean crucial information from it. The smart meters make allowances for accurate billing together with the research, too

About 8 million houses have smart meters today, but that's expected to increase to about 40 million in the next 4 years. That implies that workers who install these meters will be on the go during that time, and repair employees who test and check the meters will be, also.

Rugged technology is good for people who monitor, maintain, install and do mobile work in just about any industry. Electric crews may have to deal with inclement weather, extreme temperatures and other elements. There's also the matter of their autos and the vibrations they cause.

While the standard laptop computer taken along in the car might do all right if it's off while the automobile is on, that would imply the workers would have to turn it on at every site, be particularly careful while using it outdoors to be sure it's not too damp, and then switch it off before going to the next place.

A rugged laptop, on the other hand, can handle the vibration and any weather or temperatures that happen. Because the rugged laptop could be included with the smart meter for testing purposes, the PC must be able to stay on and remain trusty. Custom software is vital for correct testing and info encryption, so the standard laptop PC running a typical mobile operating system doubtless would not be well placed to handle all it has to do.
